Shooting in Tumbler Ridge Claims Ten Lives

(MENAFN) Ten people, including the alleged attacker, were killed on Tuesday during a shooting in the town of Tumbler Ridge in British Columbia, western Canada, according to a national public broadcaster.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police stated that nine victims along with one suspect lost their lives in the incident, the broadcaster reported.

Authorities found six deceased individuals inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. One victim died while being taken to a hospital, and two others were discovered at a residence in the community that investigators believe is connected to the attack, the broadcaster said.

Police reported that the suspect was located inside the school with "a self-inflicted injury."

About 25 people were being evaluated for injuries at a nearby medical facility, according to the broadcaster.

Officials said a shelter-in-place order affecting Tumbler Ridge and surrounding areas was lifted at approximately 6:45 p.m. local time.

An inquiry into the shooting remains ongoing.

The tragedy stands as the second-deadliest school shooting in Canadian history, after the December 1989 attack at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal, which resulted in 14 deaths.

Tumbler Ridge, a community of around 2,400 residents in western Canada, is situated in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, about 680 kilometers (422 miles) from the U.S. border.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was “devastated” by the shooting and extended his “prayers and deepest condolences” to the families and friends of those killed.
