Ten Gets Killed in School Shooting in British Columbia Town
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed that nine victims and one suspect died during the incident. Six people were found dead inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, one victim died while being transported to a hospital, and two others were discovered at a nearby residence believed to be linked to the shooting. Authorities said the suspect died inside the school from “a self-inflicted injury.”
Around 25 individuals were evaluated for injuries at a local medical facility. A shelter-in-place order affecting Tumbler Ridge and surrounding communities was lifted around 6:45 p.m. local time. Investigations into the attack are ongoing.
This incident marks the second-deadliest school shooting in Canadian history, after a 1989 attack at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal that claimed 14 lives. Tumbler Ridge, with a population of about 2,400, is located in the Rocky Mountain foothills, roughly 680 kilometers (422 miles) from the US border.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed that he was “devastated” by the shooting and offered “prayers and deepest condolences” to the families and friends of the victims. “I join Canadians in grieving with those whose lives have been changed irreversibly today, and in gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives to protect their fellow citizens,” he wrote on X.
Carney also said he had spoken with British Columbia Premier David Eby and Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree, who is overseeing the federal response. “Our officials are in close contact with their counterparts to ensure the community is fully supported as best we can. The Government of Canada stands with all British Columbians as they confront this horrible tragedy,” he added.
