BLUE TECH STARTUP DIVERSICAN INTRODUCES CHEMICAL-FREE CENTRIFUGE TO ELIMINATE BALLAST WATER POLLUTION

VentureWell and the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Adminstration (NOAA) recently convened a meeting of 15 early stage startups (including Nhut Dang and Diversican) in Newport, Rhode Island, for a hands on summit on strategy, networking and sharing resources.

SUWANEE, GA, UNITED STATES, August 25, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Nhut Dang launched Diversican in 2024 to solve the growing global water quality crisis and deliver meaningful environmental impact through advanced engineering.

The scale of the problem is massive. Global shipping vessels transport and discharge roughly 10 billion tons of ballast water every year. This water carries a dense biological mix of fish larvae, toxic algae, and deadly bacteria like Vibrio cholerae. Scientists estimate that up to 7,000 different marine species travel daily in the ballast tanks of ocean-going vessels. When an invasive species takes hold, the economic and environmental destruction is staggering. For instance, when European zebra mussels were accidentally introduced into North America’s Great Lakes, they caused over $3 billion in economic losses by clogging city water infrastructure.

“The maritime industry has traditionally relied on heavy chemical chlorination or ozonation,” says Dang. “These treatments can create harmful byproducts and corrosion, and performance can still be inconsistent, allowing invasive organisms to survive treatment and enter new ecosystems.”

To disrupt this global pathway for invasive species, Diversican is developing high-performance, continuous-flow centrifuges that use smooth, non-turbulent (laminar) flow to separate fine particles and biological material.
“Our centrifuge has the potential to physically remove bacteria-sized particles and other fine suspended material before discharge or downstream treatment,” explains Dang. “We see an urgent need for treatment technologies that remain effective under challenging real-world water conditions. Physical separation could provide an additional barrier against biological contaminants while reducing reliance on chemical disinfectants and consumable filtration media.”
Diversican’s breakthrough approach has quickly earned recognition across the "Blue Tech" sector. The startup was recently selected for the VentureWell Ocean Enterprise Accelerator, a joint initiative with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to help high-potential ventures transform novel ocean technologies into market-ready products.
